Ask Boomer Al

Issue 23; December 9, 2002

Dear Boomer Al,
I am 41 and have 15k to invest. I’m conservative. I’m looking at a CD or a Roth IRA. What would you do?
Thanks,
Not Sure

Dear Not Sure,
Investing in today’s markets is indeed a tricky affair. The amount of money you discuss is not very large but your options are plentiful.

These are the things I would consider if it were my money. Retire some debt. The interest saved is usually significant.

Get some training to increase your earning power. Your brain is always the best place to invest. Performance is the key to long term security.

Fund a traditional IRA using CD’s through a bank is a safe option today. You might look at buying a piece of real estate. It outperforms everything else over the long haul. There’s some good buys in this deflationary environment. When inflation returns you’ll be golden.
Al

Dear Al,
Do you think Social Security will be around in the future?
Concerned

Dear Concerned,
We will always have Social Security. I doubt if the Congress has the will to tamper with it.

The real problems are twofold. The system is incapable of sustaining itself under the present method of funding and the Congress seems incapable of keeping its grimy fingers out of the Trust Fund so we are always paying benefits from current tax collections. Social Security exists on paper only. There is no cash.

That is the key issue as the Boomers will put tremendous stress on the system that will have to be funded by current tax collections from the children of the free spending boomers.

Instead of allowing people to do their own investing, how about a national lottery for the pension system? Have daily drawings of a million dollars. That’s 365 million but I bet the take would be 365 billion or more annually.

Figure 30% in patronage and waste and we’re still ahead. I’d pay $30 a month for a monthly ticket for a shot at a million every day. You spend more for pizza.

_.·´¯)What's up with this?(¯`·._

I'm just old enought to remember when a handshake could bind a deal. Honor and integrity were highly regarded. Your word was your bond.

Some say with today's high pressure lifestyles that there is no such thing as a man's word any more. I see it in the real estate business everyday as all parties seem to take turns playing mirror games.

The results of course are more and more forms with signatures forcing people to deal honorably despite themselves.

This comes to play in all areas of life. How many times have you as a parent, friend, or work associate bent the truth to suit your purposes? This is the biggest threat to our freedoms, not the Homeland Security Act.

It is time to start teaching and demonstrating personal integrity both at home and in the workplace in both word and deed. Let each of us keep out own house in order and stop passing the buck.

Of course some weasel will say that it depends on what I mean by "is".

Just my opinion. Don't like it? So tell me off at ...

Before getting married and having children I had six theories on raising kids. Now I have six kids and absolutely no theories.

_.·´¯)Attitude Counts! (¯`·._

What can make you mad? Stupidity? Dishonesty? Whatever it may be, has anger ever made it easier to resolve the issue? There are personality types who assume that most others they are forced to tolerate are intellectually inferior.

This is often common in high ego driven professions like sales. A "can't lose" attitude with a puffed up bravado will often compensate for a lack of self esteem. A sort of "fake it until you make it" agressive behavior. Lying as is anger are both prevelant in people who feel poorly about themselves and have no identity outside of what they do.

The size of a person can often be measured by the size of the issue it takes to anger him or her. Learn to keep your head while everyone else around you is losing there's and you'll find satisfaction in the appreciation and respect others will have for your steadiness and dependability when the fur is flying.
