Issue #30, January 27, 2003
Dear Al,
Please help! I’ve had it at my job! I’m a hard worker
with a great record. People keep passing me up for
promotions because I don’t have a college degree.
I work circles around these people. They come to me
for advice. I’m thinking of starting my own business.
Any ideas and advice?
Thanks,
Fed Up
Dear Fed Up,
I understand. I was in your position. Despite the illogical
reasons, HR people are usually college educated and have a
built in preference for a college degree. A strong case can
be made for it but there are many exceptional people who
could do the job without one.
Stop frustrating yourself. You have several choices my friend.
Hang in and build up a pension and benefits at a solid company
and enjoy your life, go back to school and get the degree
you need, or start a business. Every choice has a price.
It boils down to what you really want. Try and relax, think it
through, and remove the emotion from it. Being upset like you
are is a prescription for trouble. See if you can find a mentor
to discuss things with. Al
Dear Boomer Al,
I enjoy your column very much. You seem down to earth and very
wise. I’m looking for a new car. I don’t need anything too fancy.
What do you suggest? What do you drive?
Not Sure,
Sarah
Dear Sarah,
Wow! A real name for a change! Sarah, I drive a ’99 Acura TL. It’s
one of the best cars I’ve owned.
Your choice of car depends on your lifestyle. If you spend a great
deal of time on the highway you want a little bulk for safety. If
you do short trip city driving you want economy because that’s the
worst type of driving for gas mileage.
I suggest you pay cash if you can. Financing a used car is more
expensive than financing a new car. It makes no sense. Leasing isn’t
the good deal it used to be. If you can afford it get a three or four
year old car with less than 50,000 miles.
Avoid luxury cars and their expensive repairs and high insurance
costs. Visit your local insurance agent and find out what cars they
choose as the safest. Insurance companies collect such data. Cars are
poor investments so use your smarts. My daughter totaled a Toyota Camry
with her kids in the car and nobody had a scratch! Al

The liberals are slowly building a concensus on stopping
the war to oust Sadam. We should have done it ten years ago.
Too much of the world's economy needs oil to function
to allow a maniac to sit on the largest reserves known.
Sorry, but that's what it's about. So suppose the Anthrax
did come from Iraq? Korea is only a threat to itself. The
South could kick their butts any day they chose to now.
The President is a no nonsense guy who knows the truth.
Speaking of truth, Reagan ran up the largest deficit in
history but both broke the USSR's back by out spending
them on defence and his tax cuts laid the foundation for
the ultimate prosperity we enjoyed through the nineties.
Bush's tax cut will do the same. Corporations should be
allowed to expense dividends.
Look at the facts.
Just my opinion. Don't like it? So tell me off at ...

"If a man does not keep pace with his companions,
perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer.
Let him step to the music which he hears, however
measured or far away."
Henry David Thoreau
It is very easy to spend a lifetime chasing other
peoples carrots firmly convinced by some smoothe
talker that it's what you really want.
Try to quiet your mind and listen to your heart.
Your well meaning friends have their own intersts
in mind. It's only natural.
Have fun. It's later than you think.
