Ask Boomer Al
Issue #31, February 3, 2003
Dear Boomer Al,
I’m a hard worker and I make good money. My wife has
a job but she wants to make more. She got invited to
a Mary Kay party and now wants to sell it.
The problem is she needs $2000 to invest in inventory
to get going. I’ve heard stories about basements
full of products women end up selling at garage sales.
Now she’s mad at me because I don’t want to spend the
money. What do you think?
Tony
Dear Tony,
Let me start by asking, if the shoe was on the other foot
what do you think she would say?
I applaud her ambition and you should to. I’ve know many
Mary Kay women and some do quite well. The only issue I
see is it does sometimes require evening activities which
can be difficult with a family.
As far as the money, your wife can take out a credit card
in her own name and place the inventory on it. Then she can
pay the loan with her Mary Kay earnings. Treat the whole
thing as a business investment. Should she fail to follow
through I’m sure she will agree to remain responsible
for the debt.
There may be other options also such as a smaller commitment.
Look into it. Wish your wife luck for me and you need to
relax and be supportive, just like you would expect from her.
Al
Hey Al,
I’m 32 and have been going to the same massage therapist about
once a month. It has really helped me, and I don’t get headaches
like I used to.
I talked my husband into trying it so he came with me.
He saw a good looking guy who gives me the message and now
he’s jealous and says he doesn’t want him touching me.
He got a massage from a pretty young girl and I wasn’t jealous.
What should I do?
Perplexed
Dear Perplexed,
Duh … what did you expect? Massage is one of the oldest fantasies
of all time and hubby dear takes one look and goes yikes! A stud
muffin with his paws on my woman! What were you thinking?
You either are that naïve or you’re more secure as a woman than
your Tarzan is as a man. He’ll be in therapy for performance anxiety
within the year.
I bet daddy starts with a new round of headaches any day now.
Perhaps you could find a new “garcon de rub” closer to home.
Jealousy must be matured through. Logic is useless. So tell me,
if your massage therapist was a Howdy Dooty look alike would
you still be going?
I get massage twice a month. It helps me with chronic shoulder pain
I have. Massage is a good part of an overall health regimen and I believe
in it. Helen had migraines for years until she found a young massage
therapist (male) who was able to help her.
Maybe dad should start doing more sit-ups? Geeze, now that wasn’t
helpful … sorry.

_.·´¯)What's up with this?(¯`·._
My daughter just had a baby. Jacob, seven pounds. Cute of course.
Number seven for Helen and I and of course we are happy grandparents.
This is her third. All are well and progressing fine.
That's the good part. The not so pleasant part was while my
daughter was on maternity leave her company terminated her leaving
her without medical coverage several weeks before giving birth.
The company is Trans Continental Talent of Orlando, Florida. The
resulting fear and stress such a thing causes to a family is
so unfair. It's funny because she always prided herself in going
the extra mile on her job. She spoke of it with pride.
Some companies really deserve their shabby reputations. I do
believe it was illegal to do so ... but we'll see I guess. I'm
not a lawyer ... just a very disappointed dad who wonders how
the men who made this callous decision would feel if it was done to
their child. If this is an example of the corporate attitude toward
women and their needs I predict your business will fail. The sooner
the better.
This is from the company's web site ...
"To our Community
Trans Continental strongly believes its responsibility to the community
goes beyond providing a valuable service and jobs. Every Trans Continental
office and franchise should encourage its employees to participate in
causes that make the community a better place to live.
To fulfill our mission and achieve our goals every Trans Continental
employee must adhere to the highest standards in ethics and commitment
to our customers. Towards that end we pledge to:
Maintain Honesty in all aspects
Exceed our customers' expectations
Charge a fair price
Outwork our Competitors
Admit our mistakes and learn from them
Faithfully support our staff"
So who is going to be a standup guy and do the right thing? Did you ever
read such a bunch of crap?
Just my opinion. Don't like it? So tell me off at ...

_.·´¯)Attitude Counts! (¯`·._
"We must be steady enough in ourselves, to be open and
to let the winds of life blow through us, to be our
breath, our inspiration; to breathe with them, mobile and
soft in the limberness of our bodies, in our agility, our
ability, as it were, to dance, and yet to stand upright ..."
Mary Caroline Richards
Sometimes going with the flow is the best option. Constant
resistance is wearing and discouraging so pick your
battles wisely.
Have fun. It's later than you think.
