Dear Al,
I like your column. I’m thinking of taking an in-home
course to get my college degree. I get offers by email
a lot. How do I know if they’re good or not?
Thanks,
Phil
Dear Phil,
Choosing to get further education is very smart. I applaud
you! It will enhance your life and your income prospects
significantly.
Online education has come a long way in the last couple of
years. You can go to the web site Classes USA for
more information.
That said, the quality of the education will depend on the
major you are considering. The opportunity to interact with
other students and an instructor could prove invaluable to
your development. Be sure your online education provides such
opportunity.
Another consideration is the value of the degree in the market
place. You might start by checking out what is available locally
for adult education. The extra effort for a degree from an
established college or university would be worth the effort.
Whatever you choose, it is a smart move regardless.

Dear Boomer Al,
I get loads of spam in my email box every day. I click on remove
me but they keep on coming. Quite a bit of it is porn. It’s disgusting!
I think I have the highest filter I can get. Any advice?
Laura
Dear Laura,
I spend enough time online to know that spam can be a real problem.
From what I understand it helps to have an Internet service
provider that works to assist you with this problem. The free
services are obviously the least protected.
I do not have serious issues with spam because my ISP has strict
filtering systems that eliminate most of it. The spam I do get is
mostly my own fault from visiting different sites and registering
for newsletters.
When you do that you frequently end up on what they call opt-in
lists that are lists of people interested in certain topics.
These people use your registration as a blanket authority to
send you email on many assorted topics. Don’t use the “remove me”
link on email messages as most spammers use this to see which
email addresses actually are good. The slime!
There are also software programs call web crawlers that collect
email addresses to use in building lists. They work behind the scenes
so you don’t know they are there. I suggest you go to
Spam Abuse for a complete education on the topic.
You can also set up an account at Spam Cop where you
can report offenders. They will make their lives very unpleasant.
Just be careful not to report newsletters and things you actually
subscribed to or you will get banned from spamcop for filing
false reports.
You also may have cookies from porn sites on your computer that you
are not aware of. Go to Content Watch for help on cleaning
up your computer and blocking such traffic.

_.·´¯)What's up with this?(¯`·._
I'm willing to bet the Phil Donahue is the salt of
the earth type of guy. I, however, find his brand
of liberalism a touch extreme. Ratings are very
poor for his show.
Many continue to be confused by the popularity of
the many conservative types on radio and TV today
enjoying such strong ratings. I find many of them
are just folks with common sense opinions.
I continue to be put off by the partisanship associated
with court nominees. The result is too many empty
benches with the resulting backlog in many courts.
The Pickering nomination heads the list. This is
pure politics and a diservice to a fine jurist.
I felt so lucky the other morning to have caught Condoleeza
Rice's address at the National Prayer Breakfast. Her words
were touching and meaningful. She is a very impressive
woman and we're lucky to have her in public service.
Just my opinion. Don't like it? So tell me off at ...

"What we do not see, what most of us never suspect of
existing, is the silent but irresistible power which
comes to the rescue of those who fight on in the face of
discouragement."
Napolean Hill
There are times of our lives that challenge us so much.
I have experienced those times in the past and I know I
will again. There are times when we must decide hour
by hour and day by day just to go on to the next hour
or day. Hang in. You can and will have better days built
on the wisdom gained. You must persist to see those days.
Try to relax and take it one step at a time.
Have fun. It's later than you think.
