Issue#35 March 3, 2003

Dear Al
I have a good friend who is going through a depression. My friend pops St John’s Wort like crazy. I’ve been trying to convince my friend to seek professional help. Any advice?
Concerned

Dear Concerned
It takes a professional to diagnose and treat depression, so your advice is wise. St John’s Wort has long been touted as an herbal wonder drug. Its effects are actually very mild and are not helpful in cases of actual depression according to Consumer Reports.

The 300 mg recommended level of St John’s Wort for depression is not without side effects itself. It has been known to disturb sleep, cause dizziness, and GI distress. It has also been known to interact negatively with some other medications.

Herbs are drugs in of themselves and should be used with caution. Prescription drugs do have side effects, but many of these have been minimized with refined dosage amounts over the years.

Herbal die-hards also claim the herb SAM-E has helped with depression and mild joint discomfort. I do believe that self-medicating can be OK for some things, but depression has dire consequences when left untreated. Your friend should seek professional diagnosis as soon as possible.

Dear Boomer Al
A guy I work with insists that we could be getting 50 to 100 mpg with our cars, but an inventor with the technology was bought out years ago by the oil companies and sworn to silence.
Can you shed light on this?
Bill

Dear Bill
I don’t know. Nobody is talking :) These conspiracy theories occur in every industry whenever difficult times come upon us. Witch hunts are futile and mostly fabrications.

The problem with many of these inventions is they lack any economically viable appeal on any level. If it paid it would be. Not politically correct I know, but the truth.

In the mean time try these gas saving tips:

1- Go slow until your engine warms
2- Allow travel time. Speeding burns more fuel.
3- Consolidate errands.
4- Cut down on extraneous weight.
5- Use cruise control when practical.
6- When manual shifting the best economy is between
1500 and 3000 rpm’s
7- Power instruments add to fuel consumption like
defrosters and heaters.
8- Keep the windows closed for best aerodynamics.
9- Start and go. Idle time really wastes fuel.
10- Maintain proper tire pressure.
11- Keep the car clean.
12- Drive the speed limit.
13- Never race up hills.
14- Avoid traveling during rush hour if possible.
15- Keep your vehicle tuned and lubricated.

These times will pass like they always do.
Just use common sense.

Goodbye Phil Donahue. Again.

You won't believe this one. There is a move afoot to give illegal immigrants who worked in the US Social Security benefits for their retirement in Mexico. It's called totalization. It would combine the US Social Security System with the Mexican system to pay benefits even to workers who used false Social Security numbers.

Representative Ron Paul, (R) Texas is taking on the State department who actually has supporters of this foolishness within its ranks. Why don't we give them the vote while were at it.

While on a latin kick, I hope the voters remember what is happening to Estrada's judicial nomination. This man is qualified and has earned the opportunity. The Congress is suppose to review fitness to serve. Appointments are the responsibility of the executive branch.

I think we need to secure the oil fields in Iraq immediately. We all know what Sadam will do if a war should start. Let's save the environment now.

BTW, last time I looked, Afganistan was nowhere near our next Viet Nam as warned by some. We have only 10,000 special forces there and the refugees are returning by the thousands daily.

Just my opinion. Don't like it? So tell me off at ...

Things I've read ... I think :)

If you had to identify, in one word, the reason why the human race has not achieved, and never will achieve, its full potential, that word would be "meetings".

and ...

When trouble arises and things look bad, there is always one individual who perceives a solution and is willing to take command. Very often, that individual is crazy.

_.·´¯)Attitude Counts! (¯`·._

"You may have a fresh start any moment you choose, for this thing that we call "failure" is not the falling down, but the staying down."
Mary Pickford

For some the future can look daunting at best. When you feel you have taken your best shot and have clearly missed the mark we can easily be tempted to quit the race.

Yet finding our stride is not racing at all. A second wind comes when the body realizes the mind is in control, not the fear.

Don't become a victim of circumstances. Recreate your situation. You can you know.

Have fun. It's later than you think.
