Issue #37; March 17, 2003

Dear Al
I just had to write back about your reply and advice back to me on needing help at the office. I’m happily married and so is she so there is no attraction there. I did take your advice and spoke to the boss about her always coming to my office to vent.

He handled it and spoke to her and now she’s not speaking to me at all, which is fine with me. Thanks for the help.
James

Dear James
Glad I could help. I often am left on my own to fill in what the whole story may be. The attraction part seemed plausible.

I wonder how many minor situations become majors because people fearing peer rejection let unacceptable behavior escalate beyond reason.

People have a right to be treated with consideration and respect. People also have the right and the obligation to speak up when they are being abused. In this case you feared her losing her job. No supervisor in their right mind would terminate an individual who has been a productive contributor for such a minor issue unless there were other issues.

Some people have tempers and the fear associated with dealing with such people is real and justified. That’s why third parties should be involved as soon as possible in difficult situations to prevent escalation when possible.
Al

Dear Boomer Al
A few weeks ago you gave advice to a couple who asked about renting versus buying. Does your advice go for business also?

I’m renting office space now but I’m thinking of buying or building because my rent keeps going up and I believe I am over-charged. Thanks.
Biz Owner

Dear Biz Owner
With the cost of money today it would seem to me that owning a building of your own would be far superior to being a tenant.

I would discuss the issue with a CPA so you could come to understand the tax advantages to you of such a move. I would also arrange to interview at a couple of local lending institutions to evaluate your credit limit and abilities.

As far as building I would first check out the resale market to see what is available. Depending on what you do there is a strong possibility that becoming your own landlord could add to your bottom line.

I would also hire a competent attorney and be sure I did it all under the proper entity to protect your personal possessions from unforeseen risks.

Running an ad will often bring some angel investor out of the woodwork who would love to put their money to work in a good real estate project. You can research who owns commercial real estate in your community at the court house. You could benefit from some experienced counsel. I have found that truly successful people are happy to assist others with advice and guidance when properly asked. Just respect their time.

_.·´¯)What's up with this?(¯`·._

I read Bill Safire's column this morning and about spit my oatmeal all over the table. Then again, why should I be surprised. Seems the Chinese have sold Iraq the fuel for sophisticated surface to surface rockets through a French trading company via Syria to hide the deed from the UN. The source says that Iraq has stored their weapons in warehouses across the Syrian border. The Syrians buy everything from the Russians so they have no need of the material. Makes one think doesn't it.

The liberals have branded Estrada a right wing extremist. It's getting out of hand folks. If people are paying attention and the war goes well the democrats will be run over in the next election. Looking that way from here. While the Congress fiddles the court benches go understaffed. This is suppose to be payback but the voters pay.

I see where the ban on partial birth abortion passed again. This time the president will sign it. I think if everyone had to witness one it wouldn't ever be dicussed again. A baby is partially born than they suck the brains out to kill the child. Had birth been completed it would be murder. God forgive us.

Just my opinion. Don't like it? So tell me off at ...

_.·´¯) Boomer Ha Ha! (¯`·._

A grandmother was telling her little granddaughter what her own childhood was like: "We used to skate outside on a pond. I had a swing made from a tire; it hung from a tree in our front yard. We rode our pony. We picked wild raspberries in the woods."

The little girl was wide-eyed, taking this in. At last she said, "I sure wish I'd gotten to know you sooner!"

_.·´¯)Attitude Counts! (¯`·._

"If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other."
Mother Teresa

We live in such a world where violence and terror are all around us. I really believe it will never end. Since man learned to hold a stick he's been hitting someone else with it. Yet among us all some manage to live peaceful lives for a time. Don't obsess over what you can't control. Think on your own life and make it better.

Have fun. It's later than you think.
