Ask Boomer Al
Issue 40, April 7, 2003
Dear Al
I work at a small but rapidly growing company. I’m
fairly high up and I just trained a young and very
ambitious new employee. He just got promoted over me
and has been a jerk toward me.
Needless to say, I’m upset and angry. I earn a good,
not great, salary. I’m fifty years old and my heart
and pride say tell them to shove this job. My wife is
worried and telling me not to do it. I haven’t gotten
a reason why this brown noser got the job that I’ve
been working for. What would you do?
Angry
Dear Angry
I’m sure you have been around long enough to realize
that many younger people get the mistaken idea that
as people age their IQ recedes. It is unfair and
unfortunate and I understand your anger. I will be
fifty-seven in a month and I’m amazed daily how some
younger men and women both assume I’m an idiot.
It’s a maturity issue. Immature people tend to be
intimidated by older workers because they are still
trying to find themselves in some ways. I have been
working with people for forty-two years and I know
what works for me. Young people need to feel superior
many times and I no longer need that. It's unfortunate
in our youth oriented society people don't appreciate
the value of the experience and wisdom to be gained
from partnering and mentoring with older workers.
Privately tell your boss how you feel and ask him if
you should feel threatened by the move. You may be
enlightened and relieved. Then again it may be resume
time. There are times when we think we deserve something
but others don't agree for different reasons.
As for the wise mouth, ignore it. His behavior will diminish
him in the eyes of others and be its own correcting force.
The world is full of bullies who feel justified in their
behavior and intolerance. They must choose to change on their
own. All too many people have no appreciation for the hurt they
cause others by trying to feel superior. He will pay a price
in failed and strained relationships and wonder why he has
so few friends as the years pass. Then again he may be
the victim of someone like himself and learn the feeling.
Move on.
Al
Dear Boomer Al
I have $100,000 to invest. What would you do with it?
Thanks, Harvey
Well if it was my money I would invest it in an income
producing asset of some type using a tax deferred vehicle.
I continue to believe that real estate has been the most
dependable wealth creating tool that there has been. Buying
mortgage notes can be very lucrative but you must learn the
ropes first. Then again it isn’t my money.
What I think you should do is contact an experienced financial
planner who is paid by fee and not by commission on the
products he recommends and lay out your financial goals. Go to
www.cfp.net to search for a certified financial planner in your
area. In the mean time put it in a ninety day CD so you don’t
jump at the first slick deal that comes along. Just a little
self imposed restraint. Good luck.

One more week has passed and the number of people spending
hours watching war news has diminished. So have the
numbers of people walking the streets of our fair land
protesting the war. Spring break is over and the professors
need to get back to training the young minds of America.
Right. Indoctrinating may be a better word.
Saddam has an army of armed children we see. We haven't
seen that since Hitler's SS recruited children in the
big war. How much more do some need to see before people
recognize the evil we are tearing down. Who cares about
weapons of mass destruction after all else we've seen.
Senator John Kerry damaged his candidacy with his unfortunate
remarks equating our President with Saddam. The liberal left
in America will use any technique regardless of how
ridiculous. Kerry voted for the war although he's been
back peddling on that recently. Being a Viet Nam vet
doesn't mean his judgement is good on all things.
The President showed class by inviting Senator Edwards,
a declared presidential candidate, along for the ride as he
visited our troops. To his credit Edwards has been steadfast
in his support for the war and smart enough to hold off
on the campaigne talk until it's over.
The French, Germans, and Russians continue their charade but
now it's about a piece of the rebuilding pie. I say let them
eat cake. Gee where did I read that? Anyway, we have found
enough evidence already to justify the WMD arguement which is
now mute.
I see where Saddam went for a walk on the fifteen square feet
he still controls. Cool. Or was it his body double. Imagine
when eleven marines show up all claiming to have shot Saddam.
Maybe the real Saddam is three feet tall, bald, and is a
Squidward look alike. Eh the joke would be on the Arabs eh.
Sorry that was my Canadian accent.
The Russians could hire the French and German ambassadors
as fish squishers for the caviar factory. There would be no
change in the smell of the whole group and their tall tales.
Then again, maybe those ambassadors who now need a job could
do it. If they survive the drive to Syria. The hot air will
show up on satelite telemetry.
So what's up with the Syrians caught fighting in Iraq? That's
not good. Expect the Syrians to get a visit to some warehouses
just across the Iraqi border soon. I assure you they don't want a
piece of us. Then again, how about the terrorist camp who was
fighting harder than the Iraqis. Sudanese, Syrians, Egyptians,
and other assorted riff raff with enough arms to fight a war.
Oh yea ... this is a war. Hmmm.
Just my opinion. Don't like it? So tell me off at ...
