Issue #45, May 19, 2003
Dear Boomer Al
I’ve enjoyed your column, but lately you seem to be
harsher and a little nastier than usual. I like the
old Boomer Al better. What gives? Just my opinion.
John
Dear John
That’s a funny way to start, Dear John … oh well. John,
you need to lighten up. Go buy a red rubber nose and
wear it to work for a week. I happen to have a pretty
dry sense of humor. Some people find it pretty funny
and others are so serious that it all goes over their
heads.
I do try to give the best advice I can but I also try
to maintain a certain sense of humor about it. I do not
let this sway me however when it comes to saying it as I
see it. If I were to please everyone who reads this column
it would be so milk toast I wouldn’t even read it.
Maybe I’ll start wearing a beanie with a propeller when
I write the column to maintain perspective. If you like
the old Boomer Al, you’ll be happy to know I get older
every day.
Al
Dear Boomer Al
You’re the first thing I read when I open the paper. We’re
proud of our growing community and the CSC News has steadily
improved. You have added a touch of class to the paper. You
usually have some pretty good advice and you seem to speak
from the heart.
How much do you read? I’m an avid reader and I try to get my
kids to read more but to no avail. Any advice? Keep up the
good work. Thanks!
Cindy
Dear Cindy
I hope you don’t mind that I shortened your note a little.
Your comments are very kind and I thank you for them.
I have a very busy mind and many interests. I have done
a great deal of reading, but I tend to be obsessive when
I get onto a topic that really interests me.
I’m a classic ADHD and I’ve found that although it has
caused me some issues over the years it has also allowed me
to learn to enjoy being multi-tasked and fast. :)
Reading can be a joy but there are so many distractions today
that many kids never develop the hunger for reading. If you
want your kids to be readers you have to develop the habit
with them when they are young by reading with them daily.
Kids will learn to connect books with relaxing time with mom
or dad when you can share ideas and learn to communicate.
Kids need to be intellectually stimulated by adults. You will
find that children from homes where mom and dad read to them
regularly usually will continue the habit throughout their lives.
I have learned in my older years the value of benefiting from
the wisdom of others. Much of that wisdom has been recorded in
books. Reading many books on one subject allows a person to
develop a balanced perspective on issues and our world. People
who do not read are forced to live by what they hear only.
Freedom requires an informed and well read electorate. Most people
do not read enough primarily because reading is a chore to them
for some reason or another. Leaders are readers in every walk of
life. Thanks for your question.

The sudden surge in terrorist attacks in Arab countries
seems to confirm that we have indeed hurt the terrorist
cause. Now they are attacking their own people. I say
good. perhaps the Arab world, especially the Saudis will
begin to wake up to the fact that those narrow minded
schools they run in Saudi Arabia are bearing fruit.
Elliot Ness died last week. The last of the great TV
G-Men. Well there is Chuck Berris from the Gong Show.
He was a government hit man :) If you're under forty you're
lost right now.
The "Hand Ringers" are at it again. I read a column here in
Florida this morning that made me want to throw up. This
guy Joe Crankshank or something wrote a long list of what he
considered idiot moves by our president and his administration.
That's OK, it's America, but he failed to offer one single
alternative on anything. Not one single opinion even on how
he would have done things differently. He doesn't know,
that's why.
In other words he's a typical modern day liberal weenie
who simply writes to tow the liberal line but has no clue
as to what to do about anything. I for one feel that Iraq
was AOK. I don't like war anymore than the next guy, but
I feel we have turned the cheek enough in this modern
world. These terrorist thugs speak only one language.
Kadafi quieted down when Reagan put a missle in his bedroom
and he's been quiet ever since.
Watch the Middle East dominos fall one after another over
the next few years because of what Bush did. Don't think
for one minute these guys aren't feeling the heat in the
Middle East. They know this President meant what he said,
"You're either with us or you're against us." The Saudi's
have launched a media forgive us tour this week. Watch
for more cooperation as the months pass. Now we need to
shoot a few dozen looters to calm down the natives in Iraq.
Now as for the French. I wonder what they will say about
Moroco. Seems this was one of their colonies at one time.
Just my opinion. Don't like it? So tell me off at ...

"No Man, for any considerable period, can wear one face
to himself, and another to the multitude, without
finally getting bewildered as to which may be
the true."
Nathaniel Hawthorne
How many of us have become lost is a world that
we try to fit into instead of becoming the person
we were meant to be. It is so hard to hear our
own heart through the noise of wanting acceptance
and popularity.
Have fun. It's later than you think.
