Ask Boomer Al
Issue #46; May 26, 2003

Dear Boomer Al
I need to lose thirty pounds. What is the best and safest way to do it? Thanks.
Deb

Dear Deb
Amputation based on my experience. Kidding of course. The first thing is to start by getting a physical exam from your doctor and ask him what your target weight should be. Generally people set impossible goals that are not really needed to be healthy.

The next thing I would do is get over to a local Weight Watchers location and register.I feel they have an excellent program based on moderation and you would have the best long term chance of keeping the weight off. They have a point program that really allows you to eat most of your favorite foods but in limited amounts.

You should also be prepared to start an exercise program you can stay with like walking. I also believe a good vitamin program is in order.

One last thing, keep your goals and the fact that you’re trying to lose weight to yourself. You will find people either gushing guilt all over you on how they’ve tried everything and nothing works so why waste your time or every conversation will seem to go right to your diet. Let them see the results as you progress that way you feel no pressure from others. The people at Weight Watchers will give you plenty of encouragement and support.

On another point, remember you can’t get fat from what you don’t eat. Good Luck.
Al

Dear Boomer Al
I have a good friend that is engaged to a slime that constantly hits on other girls and is cheating on her. Should I tell her?
Not Sure

Dear Not Sure
Seems I’ve heard this story before. I guess it comes down to how good a friend you are. There is always the possibility that she will accuse you of being jealous of her and totally reject your observations. I would plan on having to produce some supporting witnesses if you do such a thing and consider that it could all go badly for you regardless.

It’s pretty obvious that Mr. Slime is not ready to be married. Obviously if he cared about her finding out he would be more discreet. Maybe he wants her to catch him because he’s incapable of breaking it off like a man so the weasel route fits him better.

If you’re determined to do the noble thing, do it privately in case she loses it. Try this approach, “Mary, if I knew something that could really affect your future and would probably also upset you, maybe even get you angry with me, would you want me to tell you or mind my own business?”

You realize that no matter what you do your friendship may not survive and it surely will lead to a confrontation between them. I do faintly suspect that she may not be as unsuspecting as you think. For some strange reason all too many women think that everything will change after marriage. Well it does. It gets worse! Believe your eyes before marriage because people rarely change. They just get better at everything. Weasel is as weasel does.

_.·´¯)What's up with this?(¯`·._

This holiday weekend is a good time to raise the issue of Veteran medical coverage. The VA is forced to go to the congress every year hat in hand and beg for money. It's a disgrace. On January 17 it was decided that veterans without dependents could earn up to $24,640, with dependents up to $35,180. Vets with incomes that exceed these are being denied health care right now. The VA has 8 catagories of eligibility. With increasing pressure from the aging boomers the problem will get worse before it gets better. Take a minute this week to write your congress person and express support for a strong and well funded VA. I have a link at my web sight that explains in more detail. http://www.boomerjournals.com

We have now entered a phase where the liberal whining about Iraq will gain some sympathy among the weak kneed. This is a difficult task we are on. The major Iraqi weasels will start running out of places to hide and should start popping up soon. Watch for a major surprise from Iran. With WMD having been destroyed or moved before we got there finding much will be a chore. Disrupting the Middle East was enough for me right now. The goal is to keep them out of our country. What better way than to mess with there's.

It's now Memorial Day and the official (June 21) beginning of summer. The beach water in New England should be warm enough to swim in about August 15th when the weather starts to turn fallish a little again. Florida is just great year round if you love summer.

The French are hosting G7. This should be very interesting to watch. I see where the French are stacking the agenda with the hope of neutralizing the US influence. France has become an insignificant power for just these attitudes.

The Red Sox seem to be making a race out of it this year. Maybe the Yankees are getting old. The hockey season just drones on as does the NBA. No great rivalries any more. I can't wait for the football season.

Is it my imagination or has Tiger Woods been taking more time off the tour than usual? He just got soundly whipped in Europe. His game isn't back yet since his knee operation. I figure he'll be back real soon. Maybe he's suddenly too rich.

The tax cut will help. I just don't know if it will be in time to turn things around before the election season. If it does the democrats will self-destruct. They won't have anything left to talk about that anyone is interested in. I can't believe all the horrors they list that never happen.

Wouldn't be funny if some dem actually beat Bush. Why would they want to face rebuilding Iraq? I do think the Senate needs a little more input here however. There's safety in numbers. I think the only man who could beat Bush isn't running. Joe Biden of Delaware comes across as confident and knowledgeable. He's smart enough to know he has it made in the Senate.

Just my opinion. Don't like it? So tell me off at ...

Zen thoughts from a friend:

Save the whales. Collect the whole set.

A day without sunshine is like, night.

On the other hand you have different fingers.

If you think nobody cares, miss a couple of payments.

Depression is merely anger without enthusiasm.

The early bird may get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.

OK. So what's the speed of dark.

If everything seems to be going well, you must have overlooked something.

When everything is coming your way you're in the wrong lane.

Inside every older person is a younger person wondering what happened.

Why do psychics have to ask your name.
