Ask Boomer Al
Issue #47; June 2, 2003
Dear Al
I’m 16 and I get picked on at school constantly. I’m
a little overweight and my parents can’t afford to
buy the nice clothes.
I have nightmares about others teasing me and I don’t
look forward to going to school. Please help!
Distraught
Dear Distraught
I feel your pain. When I was about your age we had a
gang of bullies in my neighborhood. I didn’t fit in nor
did I want to. These guys spent my entire high school
career making me miserable. Everyday was a chore and I
couldn’t wait for it to be over. It was fights, teasing,
and ridicule in school.
My parents knew about it and there was very little they
could actually do. We also had very little so I was not
anything close to cool. I was never in.
Eventually it was over. I graduated and went on to college
until I ran out of money. I met a great girl and we’ve been
happily married for over 37 years and have seven grandchildren.
Remember that you’re a special person. There’s nobody else
like you. God made you unique and wonderful and there are
special things awaiting you in life. Cruelty and evil are part
of our world. Some of it you will just have to survive through.
Try to distinguish between insensitive teasing and actual mean
behavior. Perhaps if you didn’t give your tormentors the
satisfaction of seeing they are getting to you, perhaps it
will stop.
Toughen up a little and realize it will probably all go away
real soon. School is almost over and the added year of maturity
will calm some of it down. I also suggest you talk to an adult
about your feelings. A little counseling might be helpful.
Al
Dear Boomer Al
What kind of life insurance should we buy? My husband is 31 and
I’m 30. We have two children ages 6 and 4. We’ve had quotes from
different agents and now our heads are spinning. What to do? Thanks!
Confused
Dear Confused,
Wanting to buy life insurance is very responsible. When the unthinkable
happens the financial protection it affords can be very significant.
Here goes.
First you must decide how much you need. The purpose of insurance is to
help one transition when the primary bread winner is lost to the family.
$1,000 at 5% will provide about $5 a month for twenty years. Decide on
the income you would need and do the math.
A young family needs protection, not cash value. There are many
approaches that look good on paper but the initial cost can be a burden.
Most agents are paid higher commissions on cash value products and
they need to eat too if you get my drift. I feel that convertible
level term that is guaranteed renewable with a decreasing term rider
to coincide with the growth of the kids is a good way to go.
The convertible option protects your insurability but buying term allows
you to insure yourself for very significant amounts. Add the accident
rider and waiver of premium too. For a relatively small premium you have
lots of coverage which is the thing you need with a young family.
My opinion.

The president is making a very dangerous trip right now. The
man never ceases to show up his critics with one bold move
after another. The Arab summit in Jordan I feel is especially
froth with danger. Imagine how Al Qeada would love to get a shot
at him?
The latest flap from the liberal camp about the lack of a tax
rebate for minimum wage working families is being reported
incorrectly. The average person who doesn't read is appalled.
The truth is very few if any minimum wage earners with families
actually paid any tax at all so there is nothing to refund
them. That would be an outright gift. The president was willing
but a few Senators would not hear of it. Do your homework
to find out who.
Bob Hope turned 100 last week. The respect and appreciation being
lavished on him is well deserved. His entertainment was always
wholesome and always geared to a family audience. His support
for our military around the world with the USO showed what kind
of man and patriot he was. He never was partisan in his humor
or behavior. I can't think of a single performer today who could
walk in his shoes.
Is it me or are most of the people passing you on the highway at
high rates of speed these days young women. I don't recall ever
seeing anything like it. A cell phone in one ear, beads hanging
from the mirror, and a real attitude seem to go with the speed.
I was passed in the breakdown lane this week by a young woman
with a baby in the back seat. Probably late for work and the
daycare. Better late than dead I say. What's going on?
Just my opinion. Don't like it? So tell me off at ...

At a certain stage of life a man's hair begins to grow

Socrates had a student named "Plato". Plato had a student
named "Aristotle". Aristotle had a student named "Alexander
the Great".
The company we keep and the people we listen to have an effect.
Who do you permit into your world? Your present situation
reflects your choices. Are you satisfied?
Have fun. It's later than you think.
