Issue #49; June 16, 2003
Dear Al
I read your column last week when you had a question
on how to handle a co-worker’s body odor. We had a similar
situation where I work and we all pitched in and bought a
“care package” with soap, shampoo, deodorant, and toothpaste
and left it on his desk. Problem solved! Keep up the good work.
Harold
Dear Harold
Bravo on a job well done. It is a very difficult situation
indeed so I’m glad your solution actually worked. The
embarrassment obviously did the deed.
Our offender from last week however had been approached and
spoken to without avail so I doubt if your creative approach
would have worked in this case.
When people are discouraged for some reason or even depressed
sometimes personal grooming is one of the first things to
diminish in importance.
As difficult as it may seem, there is always room for compassion
in all things, except for BO of course.
Al
Dear Boomer Al
The day the paper comes out our family reads your column together
at the dinner table and discusses how we would answer the
questions. We get a good laugh and we usually agree with you.
Our son is a good athlete but is thinking of giving up sports to
work and earn more money. What do you think? Thanks.
Concerned Parent
Dear Concerned
I think that sounds like a lot of fun. I always discuss my answers
with Helen and let her read every column before I send it off.
There have been a few times she didn’t agree and we discuss it. I
appreciate her perspective.
You obviously have a very healthy happy family who enjoy being
together. As for your athletic son I feel it should be his
decision.
While it is true that sports is fun and can build memories and
perhaps even earn a scholarship for college, the more realistic
attitude is that he will be earning a living many more years than
he’ll play sports.
I admire very much his ambition and work ethic not to mention the
mature attitude of wanting to pay his own way. While you may be
concerned about his missing out on the fun of high school, the
reality is it may not be that much fun to him compared to empty
pockets when he wants to do things and go places.
I did the same thing your son is doing. I had money for gas and
dates, bought my own clothes, and paid for my first year of college
from my high school jobs.
Don’t be concerned. Tell him how proud you are of him and show him
your priorities in today’s sports crazed instant gratification world.
You obviously raised a very responsible young man there. Good
job mom and dad.

_.·´¯)What's up with this?(¯`·._
I see where the catholic church is in the news again. People
will have to be patient. This huge institution moves very slowly.
I had my own experience as a young altar boy of 11 when the
parish deacon tried something he shouldn't have so I'm intimately
knowledgeable of the problem.
I continue to be taken back by the level of rude and borish
behavior that one is forced to encounter in the world at large
today. Some people need to learn that the world doesn't revolve
around them and their little issues. Everyone has problems.
Did you call your dad this past Father's Day? If you called more
often one day or another wouldn't matter. Mom's keep score however.
The democrats have no candidates and no issues. Iraq is not an issue.
I am still amazed when I realize the majority of people do not
understand that 9/11 changed the rules. Now it's about hitting
you first instead of the way we used to do it. What's so hard
to understand? A few of their good guys will die in the process.
A bunch of ours did. Terrorists know only one language. A bullet.
Negotiations with terrorists is a sign of weakness to them.
Just my opinion. Don't like it? So tell me off at ...
