Ask Boomer Al
Issue #53; July 14, 2003

Dear Boomer Al
I’m 31 and I just bought a Toyota Camry and now my dad, grandpa, and my father-in-law (all veterans) are giving me guff for not buying an American car. What do you think? Thanks!
Tony

Dear Tony
A number of years ago, I (also a veteran) would have jumped on the bandwagon with them. I no longer feel that way.

The economies of the world are very much interlocked. Toyota, as have most foreign auto makers, now has a very significant presence in America and provides jobs for American workers. If I’m not mistaken I believe America is the largest exporter in the world of Japanese autos, yes I mean exporter.

Our free enterprise system is all about competition and consumers are the ultimate judge. American automakers gave foreign competition an opening with their shoddy quality. The competition has improved automobiles for all of us. Free enterprise does work when allowed to. By buying quality we raise the standards by which we all benefit. Enjoy your car. It’s one of the best on the road today.

Dear Al
I’ve never been to a chiropractor. I have friends who go and they say it helps. My doctor won’t give me a referral. What should I do?
Confused

Dear Confused
Some MD’s have viewed chiropractors with distrust. Today’s chiropractors are, for the most part, well trained for what they do and tend to also be well versed in nutrition. I personally have availed myself of their services in the past. I do not like taking drugs so I have always preferred massage and adjustment for my back issues, of which I’ve had quite a few.

The chiropractic profession was much less reliable years back but the improvements in training, licensing, and self policing within the profession have greatly improved the levels of professionalism found within its ranks.

Many insurance providers provide coverage for chiropractic services today unlike the past, but they generally require a referral. In New Hampshire for example the state recognizes chiropractors as legitimate medical practitioners who are qualified to participate in all insurance programs. Perhaps your physician feels your particular situation would not be helped by a chiropractor. I say do your homework and try it if you wish. It is possible your physician still clings to some outdated ideas concerning chiropractic.

Some people become very dependent on regular spinal adjustments. They claim to greatly benefit from them. I feel deep massage should be part of a regular health regimen. Chiropractic should be reserved for those moments when it is needed. Just my opinion.

_.·´¯)What's up with this?(¯`·._

It seems the democrats finally have an issue they feel they can beat the President over the head with. The case made for invading Iraq had the emphasis in the wrong areas, or so the claim goes. Well here is my take.

Following the 9/11 attack I personally would have concluded that we are obviously being taken for granted in the world. Like the Chinese claimed many moons ago, we were becoming a "paper tiger" with all our might and unwilling or able to use it. Why else would some muslim extremist sect dare to carry their political agenda to our shores as they did? It was time for a message.

Afganistan wasn't a message. It was a counter attack. More was needed. Iraq was a message. We will no longer sit passively by and let you hit first and play the game by civilized rules. The evil minority of the world need to know we are very willing to take you out if we need to.

So it wasn't that Iraq was ultimately a threat to our national security, although a good case was made that they were potential supporters of the terrorists, and by Saddam's own admission they were possessors of WMD's at one time, the opportunity presented itself to make a statement. To think that statement was lost on Iran, Syria, or North Korea for that matter is to be a fool.

The continued unrest in Iraq will be viewed by the rest of the world as a test of our ultimate resolve. The present debate in the US over the legitimacy of the war is giving aid and comfort to the enemy and will prolong the resistance. Unfortunately the political landscape in America leaves the democrats very little to grab onto. We all know politics always takes priority over what is best for the nation.

For those who would argue about a secret elitist plot to gain control of the Iraqi oil fields and pump billions to favored defense contractors I'll tell you this, The defense contracts awarded in Iraq went to contractors already under contract to support our military prior to the conflict. Many of these deals come from the attempt of the military to farm out areas to civilian contractors to free troops to serve in the field.

As far as oil is concerned, when viewed from a military and national security approach, I feel the potential threat of our taking control of those oil fields sends another message to our enemies who would try to cripple our economy by controlling supplies of this resource critical to our economic survival. 9/11 had an extremely damaging effect on our economy. More than people actually realize. As far as I'm concerned I have no problem with taking a whole bunch of Arab oil to sort of balance the account a little. I, unlike the politicians, have no problem saying what many people have thought. America has just put it's heel on the neck of the Babylonian demon and I think it needs to stay there for a while.

Our present President is a plain thinking and pragmatic man who understands that if we are perceived weak our troubles will only get worse. The world is a dangerous place and everyone still wants to come here to live. The talk is that American diplomats will be arrested in Belgium as war criminals. They wouldn't dare. The europeans can be an arrogant pompous lot but they are not completely idiotic. The european economy needs American investment. Just ask the French who have seen exports tumble to the US. People will eventually forgive the French but it will take a while. At least until a democrat enters the White House and kisses their lilly white butts again.

While on that topic, the House has just seen a bill defeated that I would have liked passed. It would have punished many of our major cities who have become havens for illegal aliens by disqualifying them for any federal financial assistance until they enforce the laws of the land concerning immigration. It seems some of these cities like LA, San Diego, and Seattle to name a few choose to ignore INS rules about reporting the activities of illegal aliens when arrested or involved in any type of crimes.

The arguement by some of these cities are that many witnesses to violent crimes turn out to be illegals and such a law would make successful prosecution of some crimes difficult. So how can the fed crack down on the activities of illegal aliens when some of our major cities hide them? Double Duh!!? How about the fact that many of theses illegals are actually registered to vote and support primarily the liberal sort? Think it had an effect on the vote? Like I said earlier, politics is a dirty business and power demands the needs of a few take priority over common sense and morality. The only way to stop that behaviour is to stay informed and express yourself on election day.

So most of us just go to work, out to eat, and live our lives oblivious to it all, then we buy the crap in the ads at election time instead of watching with our own eyes what is going on every day right under our noses. I find Fox News to be much less biased. You must however read. Never get all your news from one place.

Just my opinion. Don't like it? So tell me off at ...
