Ask Boomer Al
Issue #55; July 28, 2003

Dear Boomer Al
I am so sick and tired of people’s cell phones going off everywhere and people talking loud so everyone can hear them! How would you handle it?
Fed Up

Dear Fed Up
Cell phones have become the modern day boom boxes with their annoying musical ringers and beeps. There are several issues to look at.

Some people are indeed annoying. The phone is like a badge of honor. Look at me. I’m important because people call me. There are several reasons why people carry cell phones. One is obviously because it’s an ego trip of some kind. These are the individuals who are most likely to be the offenders. If they knew how utterly stupid their inconsiderate behavior was it still wouldn’t matter because, let’s face it, they’re stupid.

There are people who carry phones for business. Sales persons especially need their phones to stay in contact with clients and their place of business. Some of these individuals are stupid too and don’t care who, where, or when about phone common sense and etiquette.

There are others who carry phones for safety reasons to stay in touch from the road with children or to call for assistance. Two things cell phone users need to remember:

1- Never make your phone more important than the people you are with.

2- Remember that the phone is for your convenience, not someone else’s.

Phones should be put on vibrate in situations where the ring could cause a disturbance. Let the phone take a message. Phones should be turned off in situations where a phone would normally be inappropriate.

Top 40 musical ringers are juvenile and irritating all the time and should be accompanied by self-destruct mechanisms.

Many people don’t know this but ringing cell phones have been known to cause explosions at gas pumps. Never carry your phone when pumping gas; unless you have a top 40 musical ringer, then I encourage it.

While I’m on it, yelling into a cell phone doesn’t help the signal go further. You can talk a normal tone on a cell phone and be heard quite nicely. We don’t use strings anymore.

I read at a web site that walking down the street yelling into a cell phone is Schizophrenic behavior and could be grounds for institutionalization and, at the very least, shock therapy.

Dear Boomer Al
My X-husband is calling me looking for a date. He says he misses me and I admit I do miss him. He left me for a younger woman two years ago and now he admits he screwed up.

What do you think? Do you know of anyone where this has worked out?
Thanks.
Not Sure

Dear Not Sure
Two years sounds about right for what I call divorce remorse. Usually the offending party has had time to dwell on their behavior and could be coming to realize the error of their ways.

I remember when I was younger I had one of those VW Super Beetles. I loved that car. It was fun to drive and economical. I have missed that car for many years. I remember at the time I had changed jobs and needed a truck, so off went my Beetle.

Now I know if I could get that Beetle back I probably would be very excited, but I suspect I would regret it again within a short time. The expense of repairs for the old thing, the insecurity associated with the safety issues; well you know what I mean.

I’m afraid the fantasy of what was can never be again. The lingering memory of past behavior would always be in the back of your mind. The difficult part of course is one or both of you may be a little lonely so this reunion may seem appealing right now. While the past cannot be repeated, you would not be the first couple to hitch up for a second time.

If you do go on that date keep it just a date. Before you allow it to go past just dating you should both go to counseling where you can lay your past issues on the table and see if you actually can have a future as a couple. It’s your choice.

I say cheaters and wife beaters never change. Weasels are very smart animals and learn to adjust their behavior according to their circumstances. The part that never changes is they are still weasels.

_.·´¯)What's up with this?(¯`·._

I see where the world just lost two particularly vile residents in Iraq. The Iraqi people are starting to sound very much like the democratic party in the US. If the Bush administration said it well it must be a lie. The truth is most Americans expect it from both so what does it matter.

I would imagine that about now many people like me, despite fully understanding the political process in America, are getting pretty fed up with the destructive nature of the democratic party's approach at this point. I've yet to hear any positive solutions being offered from the left. Come to think of it, the only issue I can see is the universal hate they have for George Bush, which must mean he's on track. The far right is irritated with him too which tells me he's doing what he believes to be right no matter who it irritates. That's leadership as far as I'm concerned.

Congressman Charles Rangle (sp? like I care) of New York was absolutely outrageous on TV the other evening calling for President Bush's impeachment for authorizing the illegal assasination of foreign government leaders, a violation of US law. Rangle is without a doubt committing treason in my mind for giving aid and comfort to the enemy in time of war and he should resign in disgrace. Then again that would take class, of which he has none. He isn't even remotely credible.

The President's strategy should be to ignore the carrying on and let them talk themselves into a corner, as we all know they will. They have worn out the sixteen words at this point. I feel a Saddam sighting is about to happen any day now as the country gets smaller by the day. By the way did you notice all the pictures of Iraqi's watching TV over the last couple of days. That's something without electricity. When Saddam is gone the information about WMD's will flow. Just watch.

The child molestation issue in the Catholic Church in Boston seems to precede even the beloved Cardinal Cushing. Such a sad pathetic state. Child molestation is a worldwide epidemic that is completely out of control in some countries where children are routinely sold to vile people for their sexual pleasure.

I remember a conversation with my mother before she passed away a few years back. She spent a part of her childhood living in a Catholic convent during a very difficult period for her family. She told me that in her day, young men and women in Catholic families who were homosexuals were encouraged to follow a life of celibacy in the church with the hope that a life of abstinance and prayer would tame the drive. That's what led to the constant transfers viewing the criminal behavior as a matter of sin to be dealt with within the church family.

I know that not all child abusers are homosexuals. Homosexuality and pedophilia were both viewed by the church in those days as issues of sin, not compulsion. Even in our more enlightened times, many countinue to believe that very thing today. It does not lessen the crime however. We do live in an age where we seem obligated to apologize for the bad behavior of many people. Let's face it, some among us do evil things without concern for the harm they do others. I say we should put tracking devices on all convicted child molestors and violent criminals and track their every move like a Lojack System. Include an explosive device and you have the first true deterent. Hey I like it.

Just my opinion. Don't like it? So tell me off at ...

"A couple was entertaining, and among the guests was a man whose conduct was rather boisterous. At dinner he held up on his fork a piece of meat and in the vein of intended humor asked, "Is this pig?"

"To which end of the fork do you refer?" asked a quiet-looking man at the other end of the table.
