Ask Boomer Al
Issue #57; August 11, 2003

Dear Boomer Al
Keep up the good work. We read your column at coffee club and get a big kick out of it. What do you think of the stomach stapling procedure that is becoming more and more popular today, even with teenagers? Thanks.
Kate

Dear Kate
Thanks for your support and kind words. I try to be helpful and fun at the same time. It’s not always possible.

I am not a doctor, as you know, so take this for what it’s worth. I think there are some extreme situations where this procedure is a solution of last resort. Unfortunately I think it may become an alternative for many people who don’t have the discipline or strength to undertake a lifestyle change to lose unwanted and unhealthy weight.

The operation is not without consequences. Food bypasses an important part of the natural digestive process and gets transported directly to the intestinal track. The operation costs $20,000 and 30% of people who have it experience nutritional deficiencies, gallstones, and stomach hernias.

You can add to that list anemia, osteoporosis, and metabolic bone disease. These appear to be risks that desperate people will tolerate. Most who have the operation loose weight rapidly for about 24 months then begin to regain some of the lost weight.

I feel parents should be vigilant about excess weight gain in their children. Watch their diets and see they get plenty of exercise. In our short-cut world such solutions may just be too appealing to some, but I imagine a good physician will point out the options and risks.

Dear Al
I’m contemplating having laser surgery for vision correction. What do you think? 51 and loving life!

Dear 51
I’m glad to hear you love life. Good for you. We do live in an interesting world. I remember the late and great Bishop Fulton Sheen who had a popular TV program called “Life is Worth Living”. He was a favorite in our home.

That aside, I have heard good things about laser surgery to correct vision. The industry has come a long way. There are four types of procedures depending on your situation. LASIK is the most common for nearsightedness.

There are also PRK, RK, and corneal ring implants. Like any surgical procedure there are some risks. Just remember that needing eyeglasses is not a disease. Your eyes are otherwise healthy so you may want to get all the facts before risking permanent damage to an otherwise healthy eye.

I wear reading glasses and find the need for them annoying, especially when they are not at hand. I have a friend who had the surgery and loves the results. The thought of someone burning tissue out of my eye gives me the creeps, but that’s me.

_.·´¯)What's up with this?(¯`·._

I can't help but be irritated by the cooperation that the terrorist element in the Middle East seems to get from the Arab media. Can you see the US media releasing taped messages from criminals and terrorists calling for uprisings and civil stife? Saddam must be found and killed in the process. In the mean time we can expect ever increasing terrorist activity. Out repeated request for help from other Arab governments fall on deaf ears. All fear reprisal to their shaky autocratic governments. Saudi Arabia is at the heart of it all with those awful schools that teach hatred and ignorance.

The new Bishop of Boston seems to have taken firm control of the situation. Perhaps this damaged diocese can begin the long process of healing and regain credibility among the faithful. The revelation of a 1962 document originating with the Vatican containing instructions to keep sexual misconduct issues within the church family confidential is not really a revelation. I recall reports of that document many years ago. In those days nobody realized the scope of the problem.

With the passing of time many have lost the rage associated with the 9/11 attack. To our credit, Americans move on and get back on track. To our peril, those who would do us harm count on that. To outside observers our democracy appears to be a political self-destructive mess. It looks that way to us too at times but such is the wild world of freedom. Keep that in mind as the chaos in Iraq sorts itself out somehow. There will be a great deal of pain on the way to a free Iraq.

The California recall is the worst thing that could have happened to the Democratic party. All eyes will be on Arnold instead of the gang of twelve and a Republican win, even such a liberal Republican like Arnold, will be a psycological boost to the President who lost California by 12% in the last election.

Just my opinion. Don't like it? So tell me off at ...
