Issue #61; September 29, 2003
Dear Al
I like your column. Please help in getting the word out there
about not leaving children alone! The other day I observed a
mother going into a store and leaving her 2 or 3-year-old son
alone in the car. I slipped a note under the windshield wiper
that a kidnapper could easily have taken her child. Thank You.
A Concerned Citizen
Dear Concerned
This has been a pet peeve of mine for many years. I understand
why it happens on occasion. Harried young parents, with limited
resources dragging kids around while they run errands just get
exasperated having to deal with car carriers and all the
associated paraphernalia, sometimes take dangerous chances.
Let me share a couple of experiences I have had. Exiting a
store I came across a car in the parking lot with a young child
in a car seat, windows cracked, doors locked. I stood there
next to the car until mommy came huffing back demanding to know
who I was. I told her I was an angel who was protecting her baby
until she returned. She flipped me the bird and sped away.
Recently I was outside a bank and a young mother was struggling
with her kids trying to do some banking. I offered to stand by
the car until she returned. She was most appreciative. Having no
idea who I was she bolted into the bank. Can you imagine?
We can all tell from the news of past events there have
always been predators around us looking for opportunity. Based
on my experience there is very little you can do to make
people be responsible. The same issue exists with pets in cars.
People don't seem to understand here in Florida how hot the
inside of a car can get in just a few minutes. We had a foolish
lady leave a small dog in her car while she marketed. The dog
was panting and crying and there was nothing I could do. A
lady who saw it also had the person paged in the store. She never
came out. I picked up my stuff and returned to my car in time to
run into the young woman. She too flipped me the bird after I
made a comment about her irresponsible behavior. Maybe I should
have called the police instead. Many people just don't care.
I know it’s not what you want to hear but much of that behavior
is impulsive in nature. They already know better. We have all
had moments when we tempted fate and escaped unscathed. When I
was young many moms did not work outside the home so mom had help
just a door or two away. Today, the cost of daycare is beyond the
reach of most young families and there just isn’t the help in the
neighborhood anymore. Life has changed.
I could go on for two more pages but I’ll get worked up. I wish
I had the answer but I don’t. Help where you can. It’s what I do.
Al
Dear Boomer Al
I’m a 17 year old senior and I just found out I’m pregnant. I
haven’t told anyone. I’m afraid if I tell my parents they’ll make
me give up my baby. I don’t want to have an abortion or give up
my baby. What it your advice? Thanks.
Teen in Trouble
Dear Teen
I’m sorry you find yourself in this situation. I’ll spare you the
lecture because I’m sure you’ve beaten yourself up plenty over
this situation already. I am glad you are looking for guidance.
While I understand your reluctance to tell your parents I feel
this is something you must do. If you’re afraid go to your school
nurse or church pastor and ask them to sit with you while you tell
your parents. I’m sure they love you very much and, after an
initial disappointment, may surprise you with their reaction.
Regardless of the circumstances this is their grandchild and I’m
sure they will want to protect it and you as best they can.
I applaud your courage for not secretly seeking an abortion, as
many would do. This child does not deserve a death sentence because
of your carelessness. I feel that your parents should also speak to
the parents of the father, assuming he’s a student also. It would be
a mistake on your part to try to hide his identity. Depending on
his age there may be other issues here.
Your life from this point on will be different. I strongly encourage
you to go to counseling and to attend parenting classes. College is
out for the time being. You chose motherhood instead and it will
require your full attention.
Promise me you won’t leap into an ill-advised marriage at your age
because of this baby. Get your guidance from experienced adults, not
your peer group. This child deserves a fair shot at a good life. See
to it he or she gets that opportunity.
Adoption may be the way to go if your parents are unable or unwilling
to help. There are many loving families desperate for a baby who could
give this child a loving home. Your church pastor will know what to do,
as will your school nurse. It may be the best long-term solution for
the child. Stay strong. God bless.

_.·´¯)What's up with this?(¯`·._
I see where Senator Kennedy has crossed the line again as only
he is capable of doing. His remarks were so stupid that even
he should be embarassed. As always, the political rhetoric
is giving aid and comfort to our enemies. They know from past
experience in the world that the desire to be elected takes
priority to common sense. It also over time bends public
perception and clouds the facts.
I was watching TV a couple of nights ago and I actually saw
a positive news story on the progress being made in Iraq. The
subject was the schools. Most of the American population
has no clue as to what is actually going on besides fighting.
I do blame the administration for doing such a poor job on
bringing the positive progress more to light. We all know
that the majority of the media, led by the NY and LA Times
want a democrat in office.
Baseball playoffs are starting. This is when we see the best
baseball of the year. I predict the Marlins and the Red Sox
in the World Series. I know, you think I'm nuts. I say why
not. Both teams had very difficult schedules in the last
month of the season and they handled themselves well.
As far as the NFL I see three surprise teams so far ... Baltimore,
Seattle, and Washington. We'll see if they can keep it up.
This weekend will tell alot. This is a key game for both
the Patriots and Buffalo. Buffalo should romp, but if they
don't watch for a losing streak.
Just my opinion. Don't like it? So tell me off at ...
