Dear Boomer Al
I have a good friend who is a great guy, but he
loves to brag about how much money he makes.
He puts me down in front of others and makes
himself out to be superior.
How would you handle it?
Sick and Tired
Dear Sick and Tired
I am amused by the fact that you call your
acquaintance a great guy. It says a lot about
your self image. Are you sure that you aren’t
a bit jealous of your friend and as a result
a bit sensitive?
Let’s say your account is accurate. It becomes
obvious that your acquaintance needs to put
you down in order to build himself up and you’ve
been a little foolish to allow it.
Real friends and people with class will always
put the person first. Maturity and self esteem
lead to humility. Not the sappy doormat humility
but the kind that values all people and never
tries to be the center of attention at the
expense of others.
Your solution is very simple; you either stop
associating with this person, or if that is not
possible, work at your perspective over the
situation. Other people see what is going on
and most people are unimpressed with blowhards
and bullies. If you confront him, you’re simply
going to create a long term enemy and that just
isn’t worth it.
Jerks don’t change because we fight back. They
enjoy the fact that they can get under your skin.
The best defense is to ignore him and walk away
when he annoys you. What he thinks doesn’t make
you who you are and trust others know that too.
Be the bigger person. See yourself through your
own eyes, not the eyes of someone else.
You may think this extreme but I feel you may
benefit by some counseling. You may have some
issues that need addressing to allow you to feel
better about yourself. It’s my opinion that most
people can benefit greatly and improve the quality
of their lives from a few good counseling sessions.

Dear Al
My wife and I are animal lovers. We have two
dogs and two cats in the house. When certain
family members come over, they complain about
us having animals in the house. We love them,
but we’re thinking of not inviting them over
anymore. What would you do? Thanks.
Julie
Dear Julie
Some people are not animal lover. Then again,
sometimes it has nothing to do with that. When
you have animals in your home it is important
that you have control of those animals when
you have guests.
People do not appreciate being jumped on or
sitting in dog hair on your furniture. Many
times what you see as playful is very annoying
to other people. I know you love your pets but
people must take priority.
We have a Maltese. He’s very cute but also
very territorial. I have to watch him because
he will defend his turf as well as try to control
the movement within his area. When guests visit
us we take control of the dog until everyone
is settled then we ask them if they mind the dog.
If they do we put him in the other room. He’s a
dog and he’ll get over it.
With four animals I’m surprised you get any company
if you do not restrain your pets. Cats will normally
find a corner but dogs can be very irritating to
non-pet owners. If they are too friendly crate them
up or put them outside when you have guests.
This is not your pet’s home, it’s yours and you’re
a human, I hope. I would hate to think I’m answering
a typing dog.
Rocky just got irritated with that one. He thinks
he owns the joint, and he is not aware that he’s
not human.

_.·´¯)What's up with this?(¯`·._
It’s sometimes hard to believe how the time
does indeed fly. Here we are in the holiday
season. We indeed find ourselves in a tumultuous
world these days. Imagining normalcy after 9/11
is very difficult. That fateful day America got
the great wakeup call. I rephrase, some of
America got the great wakeup call.
Once again we are reminded that there are people
in the world who see our way of life as a threat
to them and their agenda. We are neither a perfect
people nor a perfect country. In a democratic
republic like ours perfection is not attainable.
Let’s face it, we as people are incapable of
achieving perfection so our institutions cannot
possibly be such.
Living as we do requires a level of acceptance of
others and a degree of tolerance for all things
good and evil. No people or government has ever
been able to completely eradicate evil. One thing
we do possess in America is an ideal and a basic
goodness as a people. Many Americans wonder day
in and day out why so many seem to hate us. The
fact is many more do not hate us than hate us.
The greatest wars in out recent history trace back
to the failure of the European community to act in
the early stages when oppression and persecution
were within its midst. It was American troops that
turned the tide in both WWI and WWII. Without American
intervention in Asia all of Korea would be communist
instead of half a thriving economy and free. America
helped Japan rebuild after they shamelessly attacked
us. America was the driving force behind the
rebuilding of Europe after the war as well as the main
reason the Iron curtain and the Berlin Wall are gone.
Our borders have always been open to the oppressed
of the world and our generosity is second to none
when disaster strikes anywhere in the world. The UN
in New York has been a staging ground for good but
also an opportunity for nations who wish us harm to
launch clandestine activities within our shores.
Now we face a new challenge. The scourge of terrorist
fanaticism threatens to over-run the world as we know
it. One wonders how long it will take the rest of
the world to wake up. Turkey just got a wakeup call
and the rest of Europe will feel the terror before
it is over. This morning in the New York Times'
William Safire reported on new evidence linking Saddam
to al-Qaida. New reports have surfaced showing that
OBL is in Iran and has been since he left Afghanistan.
The truth is our president was right when he labeled
the “Axis of Evil”.
When I joined the Navy back in 1965 I knew there was
a possibility I would never come home. All young men
and women know that when they enlist. It is sad when
people have to die to preserve our way of life, but
there are times it is unavoidable. This Thanksgiving
we have much to be thankful for. We should be thankful
for the brave men and women who put it on the line for
our country every day. We should be thankful we still
live in a free nation of plenty. We should be thankful
for a president with the courage and vision to draw a
line and let the world know that this madness stops
here and now.
It will not be easy and there will be many terrible
days before it’s over but we must prevail or be destroyed
by it and our way of life as we know it. To turn and
run now is to invite more 9/11’s here and around the
world. Now is the time to stand and be counted.
Just my opinion. Don't like it? So tell me off at ...
