Coffee With Maddie

“Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens . . . bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens . . .” Remember that song from the Sound of Music? Julie Andrews sang about her favorite things as a way to ease the fears of the children due to a thunderstorm. There’s nothing like focusing on the blessings in our lives to push out the negatives.
In the past 4-5 months there’ve been a number of things in my life that have been stressful. Sometimes I find myself getting so bogged down in those events that I forget to remember all the wonderful things and people in my life that bring me joy. And I have an abundance of them.
For whatever reason, yesterday was a day void of stress and filled with my favorite things. I hadn’t planned it that way. But yesterday was a great day! It just sort of happened. What I realize looking back from today is that those days have become too few and too far between. I need to work on having more of them.
This morning as I sat down to write I thought about those favorite things that made yesterday such a wonderful day. Here are a few of them:
Coffee. I am thankful for that little bean. To be able to get up in the morning, sit with my cup of coffee (with a new cinnamon/vanilla creamer I recently found) and read a good book got my day off to great start.
My black lab. Machs and I are walking buddies. We can’t even say the “w” word around our house or he gets way too excited. Sometimes my husband or kids say it anyway just to tease him. I can hardly stand up that he’s not right there looking up at me with those big brown eyes pleading with me to go for a walk. He and I put on three miles yesterday morning. It was definitely another plus to my day.
Friends. After my walk I came home, showered and got all dressed up to go to a women’s luncheon in Afton. Some of my best friends in the world were there and we had a delightful time. After the luncheon we wandered around an arts and craft fair that was taking place. Even though we’d had dessert at the luncheon, one of my friends decided since it wasn’t chocolate it didn’t count! We ended up with ice cream cones as we finished our walk and our time together.
Family. When I got home, my husband was busy doing yard work and my two older boys were off and running in different directions. My youngest and I decided to spend the remainder of the afternoon at the movie theater seeing Daddy Day Care. As much as I had dreaded seeing it after I first saw the previews, I actually enjoyed it. After dinner I spent the rest of the evening with my hubby, my three boys and a few of their friends. It was a fine ending to an already awesome day!
What will today bring? I don’t know. But after yesterday, I realize I have a choice how many favorite things I add to my day. Most of them are right in front of my nose! I just need to look up to see and enjoy them for the blessings they are.
What are your favorite things? Do you ever get bogged down, like me, and just take for granted those wonderful blessings in your life? Here’s an idea for you. This next week, make a conscious effort to enjoy some of those blessings. Here’s to many great days ahead!
Until next week . . . God bless you and yours! -Maddie
