Coffee With Maddie

This past week I’ve spent a great deal of time patrolling the Iraq/Turkey border in an F/A-18 Hornet . . . that is until the Navy pilot crash landed the plane and ended up being sent stateside. She’s already recovered and is back in the air! How could this be you might be asking? Well . . . I haven’t quite finished the book (True Valor, by Dee Henderson - 2nd in the Uncommon Heroes series), but I’m pretty sure the pilot and her love interest will get married and live happily ever after. I plan on finishing it tonight. It’s a great book!
This next week I’ll be spending time with a firefighter named Jack O’Malley and the other members of Company 81. I’ll be joining them in the book The Protector (4th book in the O’Malley series) which is also written by Dee Henderson. I get a bit obsessive (understatement) when I find an author I like and read all of the books that he or she has written.
I encourage you to take a look at these books at www.deehenderson.com. Ms. Henderson provides the first chapters of each of her books at this site. I e-mailed her to say “thanks” for providing me with so many hours of pleasure. A couple of days later, to my surprise, I received an e-mail from her, personally thanking me for choosing to spend my free time with her books!
I’ve been reading for pleasure since I was very young and have enjoyed countless hours with good books, both fiction and non-fiction. Up until about 2 months ago I was in 3 book clubs. Each club would read one book per month and then get together to discuss it. I’m now down to one club since one disbanded and I dropped out of another. It was getting stressful for me to read! And since I usually use reading to de-stress, I needed to cut down. I wasn’t finding time to read the books I really wanted to read for pleasure.
This month, for the club I’m still in, we’re reading Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire, by Jim Cymbala. The author is the pastor at Brooklyn Tabernacle and this is his story of how the church went from 20 people when he came to it in 1972 to over 6000 today. Another very interesting and humbling story!
Have you started your Christmas shopping yet? Do you have any readers on your list? Books make wonderful presents that can keep on giving for hours and hours (sometimes days and days) after they’re opened. But what if you don’t know what that special someone likes to read? Here are a few ideas to solve that:
1) Buy them your favorite book (if it’s appropriate). I’ve given away numerous copies of the book, Magic Kingdom For Sale: Sold. It is first in a series of fantasy books written by Terry Brooks.
2) Buy a gift certificate at a local bookstore and let them pick out what they want. Gift certificates are among my favorite gifts to receive.
3) What about a magazine subscription? There are so many magazines available today - find one that the person you are buying for would find interesting. Buy a current copy and include a note that you’ve paid for a subscription in their name. Even people who don’t like to read books will usually read a magazine. Talk about a gift that keeps on giving!
Mark Twain said this, “The man who does not read good books has no advantage over the man who can’t read them.” I’m sure this applies to women as well. This holiday season, take time to read a good book. I’d love to know your favorite! - you can E-mail me at maddie@boomerjournals.com and let me know what it is!
Until next week . . . God bless you and yours! -Maddie
