Coffee With Maddie

name

Yippee! I think spring is finally here. People are out walking, biking, golfing, working in their yards and just plain enjoying the sunshine. Yesterday I got my lounge chair out and sat out on my deck, basking in the sunshine for over an hour with a good book. What a joy! So other than the fact that ALL of my spring/summer clothes from last year have somehow shrunk, I’m ecstatic that the warm weather is here.

Okay, let’s go back to this clothes issue for a couple of minutes. I think I wrote something similar to this last November. Maybe it was that some of my fall/winter clothes were a bit tight? At that time I had every intention of going to Weight Watchers, but then the holidays came, and then winter set in and then my jogging suits and sweatshirts seemed to fit just fine. So . . . now I get to deal with this issue all over again - or not. Sometimes I feel like Cathy from the Cathy comic strip.

After trying on a multitude of different clothes last night in an effort to find something to wear to church this morning, I decided on my black jeans and a top that looked “springy.” I came downstairs and announced to my husband that I would have to go shopping tomorrow for some interim clothes until I get back into my other ones. Bless his heart! He said, “Whatever you need to do Maddie is just fine!” The common response from Family Feud popped into my head - “Good answer Honey!” A trip to the store this afternoon solved my problem - at least temporarily.

Something’s different this time around though. I’m really not that upset about it. I’ve battled these same 15 pounds off and on for the past 20 years. And to be completely honest with you, I just don’t want to spend the energy to battle them again right now. I have other issues to deal with that need my energy more than those extra pounds do. I’ll try to get out and walk more and I’ll try to be a bit more conscious of how many servings I eat per week from the candy/cookie food group. But for now? That’s it! I finally feel good enough about myself that I don’t feel the need to completely obsess over this!

Interestingly enough, when I went to church this morning, taking care of ourselves was the main focus of the pastor’s message. He was finishing up a series from a chapter in the Bible often referred to as the love chapter - I Corinthians 13. His main point was this: You need energy to love people. He pointed out that sometimes our physical, emotional and spiritual resources become drained and, consequently, we aren’t as effective in our relationships. He stressed the importance of working on those areas in our lives. Point well taken!

Here’s the $64,000 question of the day: How well do you take care of yourself? There was a time in my life when I didn’t even know what I needed to do in order to do that. Many books and counseling sessions later, I have a very good idea of what I need to do. It accounts for the reason I’m choosing not to worry about my extra pounds today. I just happen to be focusing on other areas right now. What about you? Do you know what you need to do when your reserves start running low? Maybe take a few minutes this week to think about the ways you take care of yourself. You’re worth it!

Until next week . . . God bless you and yours! -Maddie
